About the Hotel Design Award

The prestigious industry award “Hotel Design Award” targets hotels that were completed and opened in Europe within the last one and a half years before the 196+ forum Milan. The prize goes to a hotel which stands out from among its competitors in terms of architecture, design and innovation, no matter whether it is a luxury or a budget hotel, a chain hotel or privately managed, short or long stay, city hotel or holiday resort. 196+ forum Milan regards a homogeneous combination of all the individual aspects to form a winning hotel concept.

Hotel Design Award 2023

We are again looking for exceptionally designed hotels and will be awarding, for the second time, the Hotel Design Award during the 196+ forum Milan, from 16 – 17 April 2023 at the nhow Hotel Milan.

After last year’s introduction of the award, which proved to be the highlight during our festive dinner, our interdisciplinary jury cannot wait for this year’s applications.

Therefore, we are targeting hotels that were completed and opened in Europe between October 2021 and April 2023. Please have a further look at our Set of Criteria for 2023 below.

Hotel Design Award 2022

The winner of the Hotel Design Award 2022 is Casa Cook Samos in Greece. The prize was awarded for the first time during the 196+ forum Milan on 6 June 2022.

Andreas Martin, jury chairman: "This year's winner Casa Cook Samos convinced the 196+ Hotel Design Award jury in particular by the clear, yet restrained design line of the resort, proposed and implemented by the Athens-based architecture firm Block 722, using predominantly local construction and furnishing materials. It was important to the owner family led by managing director Orestis Vallis to maintain the recreation of a Samian village character (a basic idea of his grandfather), but with a modern interpretation. This includes village squares as intimate meeting places for hotel guests, which become water squares in the resort, but also the successful integration of the village road leading through the hotel complex, as well as the presence of the island airport located right next door. In the successful interaction with the brand owner Casa Cook, an exceptional hotel for adults has thereby been created, as a fitting complement to the other hotel and restaurant businesses of the Doryssa Group of Companies, which has been rooted on the island of Samos for three generations!"
From the 15 hotel applications from nine European countries, the interdisciplinary ten-member jury had selected ten nominees. Of these nominees, the following three hotels were selected as finalists (in alphabetical order):

25hours Hotel Piazza San Paolino (Italy, Florence)

Balcone di Guilietta (Italy, Verona)

Casa Cook Samos (Greece, Potokaki, Samos Island)

Sebastian Noack, spokesperson of the jury and Head of International Project Business at Bette: "The three finalists cover the entire range of storytelling: From a clear, loud themed mission statement to integration in historical surroundings to the rediscovery and reinterpretation of the regional, original form of living as an authentic vacation experience. These very contrasting concepts also challenged us in the evaluation and led to very intensive discussions - but ultimately with a very clear result.“

The criteria for the award included the originality of the architectural and design concept, the associated architectural quality of the building and facade, and the design of the interior. The focus of the competition is the design approach for a convincing hotel concept.

We would like to thank the jury:

Meet the sponsor of the Hotel Design Award:

Bette is known for its continuous innovation in creative and functional design.
Today, successful product design goes beyond the product itself and has to be seen in context of the entire design concept of a project.
Therefore, it is important for Bette to seek a close exchange with designers, developers and operators and to support them in the further development of design concepts.
A competition like the Hotel Design Award offers a good opportunity to do this and to promote forward-looking concepts.
